Using around 100 works, the solo exhibition provides insight into Giacometti's world and the themes that shaped his work.
Alberto Giacometti (1901–1966 CH), who achieved fame during his lifetime with his distinctive sculptures and also worked as a painter, draftsman and graphic artist, is one of the most important artistic personalities of the 20th century. Using around 100 works, the solo exhibition provides insight into Giacometti's world and the themes that shaped his work. The focus is on rarely shown drawings and graphics from the last two decades of his life, which are complemented by sculptures, paintings and documentary photographs by famous photographers. At the center of Giacometti's work is the human being. Throughout his life, he pursued the goal of capturing the lively expression of his counterpart and capturing the human appearance in its entirety. He did not want to create lifelike representations, but rather capture his subjective perception of reality in order to get to the essence of his motifs. His works, which reflect the search for the essence of humanity, have not lost their appeal to this day. The works in the exhibition come from the Klewan Collection. The former gallery owner Helmut Klewan, who ran branches in Vienna and Munich, first exhibited the Swiss artist's work in Germany at the end of the 1980s and today owns, among other things, the most extensive private collection of works by Alberto Giacometti in the German-speaking world.
