Opera by Ludwig van Beethoven. In German language.

Leonore, disguised as a man under the name Fidelio, goes in search of her husband Florestan, who has disappeared without a trace. Because he had told the truth, he became a political prisoner in Ludwig van Beethoven's only opera FIDELIO; the governor Don Pizarro keeps him locked up. She manages to free him - a daring and selfless endeavor that goes beyond mere so-called "husband love" as she says she would have saved him had it not been her husband. Today, however, such a happy ending seems a bit queasy: At this point in time, there are still people around the world as political prisoners in prisons and camps. A different fate is destined for most of them, flight is often the only way out and refugees are also threatened with new hurdles and repression.

Even before the drastic changes of the last few months, the Pforzheim artistic director and director Thomas Münstermann had an idea of how to effectively stage this opera, its political statement and the theme of imprisonment beyond the Beethoven year 2020 and thus to the persistently precarious situation of political prisoners: "100 industrial cages were purchased for the theatre. They are supposed to take on different functions on stage. Inside the cages are dolls that take on the roles of the prisoners. For this purpose, Cina Dilber designed the costumes and associatively dealt with current images of barriers and developed creative symbols that distinguish the characters in the opera from one another or connect them".

At the end of the Beethoven anniversary year 2020 - the famous composer would have been 250 years old - the Kurtheater Baden is showing FIDELIO with a strong, tall and heroic woman as the title character. On December 17th, a music-theatrical evening with the KREUTZER SONATA based on the music by Beethoven and Tolstoy's novella of the same name, newly arranged by Lukas Bärfuss, will be shown.
