Exhibition | Artist's Choice: Bethan Huws

Fr. 1. March - Su. 1. September 2024

Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein mit Hilti Art Foundation, Vaduz

  • Exhibition

Curated by Bethan Huws.

Bethan Huws (*1961 in Wales) is the second artist to take part in the Artist's Choice format, which was initiated in 2022. About a year ago, Bethan Huws was invited to curate an exhibition based on the works of Marcel Duchamp for the Artist's Choice series, which are part of the collection of the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein. Works from the collections of the Kunstmuseum and the Hilti Art Foundation as well as some of their own works were included in the exhibition. A scenography was developed that includes works by Josef Albers, Max Beckmann, Lucio Fontana, Alexej by Jawlensky, Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso and Thomas Struth - four of whom will be physically absent, but conceptually present. Four new video works will be produced especially for the exhibition: the first deals with Fountain, the second with the Ready- made, the third with Guillaume Apollinaire and the fourth, General, with Duchamp in general. All of the works shown, from Josef Albers to Lucio Fontana, say something about Marcel Duchamp and do not simply serve as an end in themselves - with the exception of some of Huws' own works, because that's exactly what they were originally intended for. Works of art open up a range of possible interpretations; Artists are used to this. But that doesn't preclude their original goal. To a large extent, and entirely in the spirit of Duchamp, the exhibition questions what we see. A production by the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, curated by Bethan Huws.
