The Incineration of Reason

Writing has come to feel like an overly rational act.—one tinged with a sense of futility

In the world itself, there is no „reason.“ There are only phenomena, existing exactly as they are. Humans believe they have understood the world by naming it, yet such understanding only keeps us within a small, finite world.

I cremate my own calligraphy.

What we see as ash is but a lingering shadow; when meaning itself burns away, nothing remains.

It dissolves into the land, the sea, and the sky—returning to the realm of pure phenomena, destined to reappear as something new.

The world simply is vast and nameless.

Nobuhisa Kurita

A Japanese contemporary artist. At the age of 19, he won first place in Japan in the U23 division of a national calligraphy competition. While his artistic roots lie in the traditional Japanese art of Sho (calligraphy), his current practice focuses on conceptual works that challenge the boundaries between language and reality.

He explores the paradox that while words are tools to understand the world, they also act as walls that block our direct connection to it. By blurring the outlines of language, he attempts to reconnect with the pure reality that exists beyond words. To date, he has held four solo exhibitions in Tokyo and one in Zurich, Switzerland.
