"kollabor": a space where art becomes tangible for children.

"kollabor" is the new offer for small children and their adult companions: a room in which art becomes tangible for children. Small children understand the world with all their senses, with their hands and feet - ways of perceiving that are usually not allowed in museums. In the sidelight room, a place has been set up to meet these needs, which allows the youngest children (from 0 to 4 years) to encounter art and play freely and creatively. The focal point of this room is the sculpture Civilian Defense Vaduz by the American artist Dan Peterman. The work of art installed in the sidelight room can be touched and walked on (without shoes). It can be used as a hiding place or meeting place. Around it are materials that invite play and exploration. Early aesthetic-cultural experiences and educational experiences are of great importance for the development of the child. With the kollabor, the Liechtenstein Art Museum is making a contribution to aesthetic education in the field of fine arts and thus to the implementation of the UN Children's Rights from early childhood. The name "kollabor" carries another main concern of the museum: to enable and encourage collaborative processes. This means working with individuals, groups or organizations, learning from each other, engaging in open-ended experiments. The content and forms of use of the kollabor arise in a collaborative learning and working process with children, their companions, artists, art mediators and educators. So far, the following have been involved: children from the Villa Wirbelwind daycare center with their carers and the art education team (Simon Egger, Simone Fiorillo, Beate Frommelt, Elena Hohl, Susanne Kudorfer). We received important suggestions from: Marlen Jehle from the Eltern Kind Forum, the Montessori educator Monika Nather, the Pikler educators from the Storchennest Grabs and from the SpielRaum Schaan, Karin Kraus from Lapurla, Anna Beck-Wörner from the Kunsthalle Ziegelbrücke and the author Anna Ospelt. The project is supported by the Binding Foundation. Your visit to the kollabor The room can be used independently during the museum's opening hours. Entry to the sidelight room is free. Someone from the art education team is on site every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. and every Thursday from 2 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. (except public holidays). Playgroups and daycare centers are very welcome. To arrange an appointment, please contact the art education department: kunstvermittlung@kunstmuseum.li or +423 235 03 21. Dan Peterman, Civilian Defense Vaduz, 2023 The artist Dan Peterman (*1960 in Minneapolis, USA, lives and works in Chicago) is represented in the collection of the Liechtenstein Art Museum with several works. At the invitation of the museum, the sculpture Civilian Defense Vaduz was realized in close cooperation with the art education team. 1000 cloth sacks filled with sand are spread out on the floor and stacked to form a wall. The result is a walk-in space within the room that creates a meeting place and is reminiscent of a nest or a protective zone. Peterman first realized Civilian Defense in 2007 for the Sharjah Biennial in the United Arab Emirates. The work was purchased by the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven. For the Vaduz version, Peterman developed a new form of sculpture. He selected upholstery fabrics from Tisca's stock in Appenzell, which were sewn by employees of the Textrina department of the hpz special education center. The museum technology team filled the bags with around 20 tons of sand. The material and patterns of the fabric covers create a domestic impression. At the same time, the construction is reminiscent of barriers against attacks or floods. Between public and private space, the work in the sidelight hall of the art museum forms a meeting and retreat place that visitors can use individually or as a group. On December 3, 2023, an artist talk with Dan Peterman on Civilian Defense Vaduz took place - listen to it on Soundcloud.
