Schmerzen kennt jeder Mensch aus eigener Erfahrung. Während akuter Schmerz eine Warn- und Schutzfunktion besitzt, verselbständigt sich chronischer Schmerz und wird zur Krankheit. Schmerz besitzt auch eine Bewusstseins- und Gefühlskomponente, die Art und Intensität des Schmerzerlebens bestimmt. Diese Ringvorlesung thematisiert unterschiedliche Aspekte des Phänomens Schmerz und gibt Einblicke in die aktuelle, faszinierende Schmerzforschung.
