In 536, a mysterious plague broke out and soon spread from Byzantium to Rome - the so-called Justinian Plague. Geneticists have now identified the pathogen as a new strain of bubonic plague. At the same time as the pandemic, extreme weather situations and crop failures increased. There is evidence that a volcanic eruption was the cause of the plague.
