The writer Sana Valiulina lives in the Netherlands. Her childhood in the Soviet Union with a father who was silent and didn't let anyone get close to him except books, gnawed at her so much that she set out to search for clues. While she works through letters and diaries full of beautiful drawings and photographs, the director Aliona van der Horst searches through archives and looks at material that the Nazis filmed of Soviet prisoners of war.
