Josef Hader (Austria 2024)

«In Andrea Gets a Divorce, Birgit Minichmayr plays a policewoman who separates from her husband. To be more precise: she has already said goodbye to him emotionally and just wants to get rid of him, but he, a drinker and choleric, refuses to face the truth. (…) Josef Hader, who directed and wrote this film, breaks the connection between the two with a diabolical twist: on the way home from a party, Andrea drives over her own (ex-)partner, who was drunk and driving home alone and without lights. She gets out for a moment, realizes that his heart has stopped beating - and, driven by the devil, commits a hit-and-run. Andrea gets a divorce? No, Andrea seizes the opportunity. Andrea runs away. Amazingly, she gets away unmolested at first. The dead man is run over by another car that same night, and its driver, a melancholic religious teacher (Josef Hader) tormented (and warmed) by a guilt complex, takes all the blame on himself.» (Peter Kümmel, Die Zeit, February 19, 2024)«After the urban film Wilde Maus, Hader's second work as a director is the exact opposite. A tragicomedy that takes both the elements of tragedy and comedy seriously and, above all, the setting: the Austrian province: ‹The Austrians are totally convinced that the Austrian province is something very special. But I don't believe that because when I was young I saw Detlev Buck's film Karniggels and thought to myself: That's just like us.›» (Anna Wollner, ndr.de/kultur)95 min. / color / DCP / D/d
