Does the premium relief initiative really provide relief?

Tuesday, 21. May 2024

Käfigturm, Bern

The rising health insurance premiums are causing great concern among the Swiss population - this is shown by the Worry Barometer, which is collected annually by gfs.bern. In June, the Swiss will vote on two initiatives that aim to address this problem. In this voting debate, the Polit-Forum Bern is focusing on one of them in particular: the Premium Relief Initiative.

The premium relief initiative demands that insured persons must spend a maximum of 10 percent of their disposable income on premiums. The initiative also defines that the federal government will cover two thirds of the total costs in the future, while the cantons will only have to bear one third. For the initiators, these are necessary measures to relieve the burden on people in precarious financial situations in particular. For opponents, however, the initiative means more costs and an interference in the cantons' powers. In addition, there is no incentive to curb health costs. Can the initiative solve the premium problem in Switzerland in the long term, or is it more of a band-aid policy that will harm the health system in the long term?

Federal Councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider presents the Federal Council's position on the premium relief initiative and the cost brake initiative in an input speech.

Afterwards there will be a panel discussion on the premium relief initiative with:

Pro:
Seraina Patzen, Green Councillor
Flavia Wasserfallen, SP Councillor of States

Contra
Marc Jost, EVP National Councillor
and another participant.
Moderation: Brigitte Walser, Bern Tamedia department
