When Santos Luzardo (Julián Soler) returns to the Venezuelan plains to claim a piece of land that rightfully belongs to him, he is confronted by his unscrupulous neighbor Doña Bárbara (María Félix), who has taken possession of the property in his absence. Doña's life is marked by a tragic past: she lost the man she loved and survived rape. In her deep bitterness, she rules over the people around her with a mixture of deceit and witchcraft. When she unexpectedly falls in love with Santos, he is already in a relationship with her rejected daughter - which only angers Doña's malice even more. María Félix embodies one of the most famous anti-heroines in Latin American literature in Fernando de Fuentes' intriguing western melodrama, an adaptation of the novel by Rómulo Gallegos.
