What do the paintings of Titian and William Turner, of Caravaggio and Van Gogh still have to tell us today? How are the masterpieces conveyed to visitors, what is behind a museum operation, and how can such an institution be marketed?
The director Frederick Wiseman (LA DANSE, AT BERKELEY), who was awarded the Golden Lion for his life's work in Venice - one of the most important pioneers of US direct cinema - spent several weeks in the National Gallery in London in 2012. In his unmistakable style, which is based on 'pure observation', Wiseman shows us everything he sees as a witness in the museum: the world-famous works of art in monumental close-ups, but also everything else that makes up a museum operation: guided tours, lectures, concerts, the curators and art mediators, the museum management or marketing specialists at work and the visitors and their view of the paintings.
