Explanations of the old roof truss of the Appenzell town hall

patched!
Of restoring and repairing

We are all familiar with patching – a broken spot here, a torn paper there, a missing screw, a ripped seam or a loose button. There is always something that needs to be fixed as quickly and easily as possible. Mending and repairing are part of everyday life. From makeshift makeshifts to professional repairs, the range of restoration work is wide and the patchwork often imaginative.
The Museum Appenzell presents a wide range of patched things, mostly from its own collection. These show with what skill and with how much improvisation women and men went about the patchwork. In addition, a selection of films by the Swiss Society for Folklore, made between 1958 and 1972, gives an insight into various old handicraft techniques.

As part of the accompanying event "Centuries-old carpenter construction and contemporary timber construction, Albert Manser, Holzbau Albert Manser AG, Gonten, explains and shows how the old roof structure of the Appenzell town hall was reinforced.
