The glea­ners and the glea­ner

Agnès Varda, a key director in French film history since the Nouvelle Vague, reinvents herself at the beginning of the 21st century: with her handy digital camera, she follows the theme of collecting in its ramifications in art and cultural history, but also current politics. "The collectors" are the gleaners in Jean-François Millet's famous painting, but they are also the people on the fringes of society who have to live off what others throw in the trash. Varda, herself a collector and recycler of images and stories, questions the political and ethical shortsightedness of the throwaway society in autofictional form.
