"The Plunderers was Kane's first film in color, and with cinematographer Jack A. Marta he made the most of the red and blue two-strip Trucolor process. Night and day become almost a continuous stream, and anything white or light is immediately highlighted, giving the film a supernatural quality and creating an immediate contrast to the grimy nature of a Western.Aside from the genre-busting color, The Plunderers begins like a typical Western with bad guys on the run and women working in a saloon; but as the plot progresses it develops into something quite different. The relationships between the four main characters (Rod Cameron, Forrest Tucker, Ilona Massey and Lorna Gray) come to the fore and are unexpectedly poignant. The men and women mostly stand side by side as equals and share power over their relationships, which is incredibly rare in a Western.
