JUSTICE NWAFOR, CAMEROON: AN APP FOR THE WAR OF INDEPENDENCE

Since 2017, English-speaking separatists in western Cameroon have been fighting for an independent state, which they call Ambazonia. The conflict is a late consequence of colonialism and a legacy of decades of oppression by the French-dominated state. In order to finance their ongoing struggle and to circumvent the Cameroonian banking system, the insurgent groups rely on an app: the electronic payment service provides them with donations from the population.

Languages: English and German

Justice Nwafor is a Nigerian journalist. He writes about the environment, economy and health. He publishes his work on the HumAngle and Earth Journalism Network platforms, on Reuters and the BBC. In 2023 he received the Sanlam Awards for Excellence in Financial Journalism in South Africa.
