Sheku Kanneh-Mason | Harry Baker | von J.S. Bach bis Big Thief

No other composer (not to mention female composers) has had such an impact on music history as Johann Sebastian Bach - and not just in the field of classical music! Bach's traces can also be found in jazz, pop and folk music. This gave “artiste étoile” Sheku Kanneh-Mason the idea of following the trail in his recital. He plays excerpts from Bach's First Suite for solo cello and presents arrangements of Bach preludes and chorales together with pianist Harry Baker. With the Bachiana brasileira No. 2 he presents a homage by the Bach admirer Heitor Villa-Lobos to the legendary Thomaskantor. And with Moravian folk songs by Leoš Janáček he opens up unexpected cross-references: Like Bach, the Czech Janáček, as a kind of brother in spirit, drew on the pure source of folk music, explains Kanneh-Mason. But he goes one step further, to the two American jazz greats Bill Evans and Pat Metheny, and shows how polyphony à la Bach also became fruitful for them. Just like the British soul and folk singers Lianne La Havas and Laura Mvula, who also can't be missed.
