Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis: "In the Forest"
Igor Strawinsky: "L'uccello di fuoco" (Suite 1919)
Peter Tschaikowsky: 1. Sinfonia in sol minore op. 13 "Sogni d'inverno"
Direction: Modestas Pitrėnas
In the spring tour of 2024, the SJSO will immerse itself in fairy-tale musical forests... "Miške" is the symphonic poem by Mikolajus Konstantinas Čiurlionis from 1901. A delicately orchestrated dream of the Lithuanian composer and painter. About ten years later, Igor Strawinsky amazed the Parisian ballet audience with his "Firebird", a fairy tale tale in the garden of the evil magician Chaschtschei. Rarely has music been written as richly colored as this ballet, which represents both the culmination of Romanticism and the prelude to Modernity.
Peter Tschaikowski's First Symphony is also a dream musical journey. Titled "Winter Dreams", without formulating a more precise content. this debut by the great symphonist Tschaikowski is full of singular beauties. Interestingly, all three composers were in their twenties when they wrote their works, making it a fitting program for the young musicians of the SJSO! The tour is curated and directed by Modestas Pitrėnas, principal conductor of the St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra and specialist in the works of his compatriot Čiurlionis.
